How to be an activist / Comment devient-on un(e) activiste?

For me the event was very moving and inspiring because this women were so authentic and generous with sharing their struggles and joys in pursuing a cause that they believe in. It’s a great thing you’re doing.

What better way to celebrate International Women's Day than an evening of drinks & discussion with 3 very different female activists? We hope we inspired Montrealers to do something about the problems they see in the world, thanks to our panel:

  1. Marika Anthony-Shaw: founder of Plus1.org, which raises $1 from every concert ticket sold for causes that are beloved by bands like Arcade Fire, The National, Macklemore and more. She’s also a former Arcade Fire band member, a mother, and an activist on multiple fronts.

  2. Beatrice Deer: an Inuit woman, mother, artist and quiet leader. Her life experiences include suicide, sexual abuse, alcoholism and more. Yet none of these define her, and today she is a successful musician and a leader for many others who seek to heal themselves. She is also a bridge between her community and the non-indigenous.

  3. Jane Rabinowicz, a change-maker and seed expert who reminded us that our global agricultural system is based on an increasingly shrinking variety of seeds - which has a huge impact on everything from our communities, our cultures, our diet, and our planet. She was named as one of the Globe and Mail’s 53 most influential people in 2016.

We also asked our guests what issue they wish they could solve, if they could be activists in their own worlds. Check out their answers in the images below, courtesy George Mavitzis.
