A meal to support and learn about indigenous women

  • Restaurant Nora Gray (map)

The Native Women's Shelter of Montreal was the first time WeDoSomething worked with the indigenous community, and it taught us more than any school ever has about our government's treatment of the indigenous communities and culture. This FUNraiser marked the moment when we decided that every year, we will dedicate part of our efforts to educating ourselves and our community about the cultural genocide perpetrated upon indigenous peoples in Canada, to supporting their efforts to rebuild themselves and their cultures, and to reconciliation. A special thanks to Nakuset, the director of the NWS, for taking the time to teach us that we were not just ignorant, but ignorant of our ignorance.

...my favourite thing about WeDoSomething is the people you attracted, the people that came to the event. They were all super happy to be there, and they were super happy to be supporting the cause and so everyone had a smile on their face, no one was annoyed with anything. That was wonderful for us as restaurant owners.
And there is no middle man – we’re going to see what we did, and we’re going to see that van…and we’re going to know we did that. That’s amazing! It’s not like going through a charity and you don’t know where your $100 is going - we literally know where it went, we chose the cause (together). I think that’s awesome.

We raised $6,763.50 which helped them buy a van to all the things a shelter does: buy groceries, pick up women in emergency situations, drive women to court, and to their appointments. Thank yuo Nora Gray, for opening your beautiful restaurant to a beautiful cause, and to Emma, Lisa and Ryan, the owners, for serving us themselves, to help us keep costs down and donate the maximum to the cause.
