A meal with and for the indigenous community to prevent suicide

  • Lawrence restaurant (map)

Following a spate of suicides in the indigenous community of Attawapiskat, WeDoSomething Mtl decided to do something, so we searched for and found the only indigenous-run conference to fight suicide, Dialogue for Life. On May 30th, sixty WeDoSomething-ers gathered at Lawrence restaurant to connect with one another, and to learn.

Indigenous musicians Beatrice Deer and Odaya played for us, the team behind Lawrence feasted us and together we raised $7,188.52, with the support of the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Canada, Mr. Geoffrey Kelley. That money was used to pay for the travel, registration and accommodations for a group of fifteen youth who lost their friend to suicide 3 days before the Dialogue for Life conference, so that they could attend and learn healing traditions.

What a great concept The ticket price is super manageable so it gets everyone in at a low investment…The evening is a great collaboration of dynamic people, gathering together in a cool space, sharing a great meal and learning about something raw and real. It shines a light on a needy cause and makes it super accessible to help. We need more and more of these events to get people educated and involved.
